The Big House Move

This is my new house.=) I have a house again. It is in need of some love...along with some new windows, carpet, paint, etc, so I can't actually live in it quite yet, but I am SO excited about owning it, and about making it beautiful. Its going to be so much fun. Gosh darn I'm excited!

After purchasing our property, we started the hunt for a home. We wanted something we could pay cash for and live in until we could save up to build what we really want. We thought that would mean buying and transporting a mobile home, and I did actually find one that I liked a lot, but things worked out much better than we had anticipated.

We have some friends in our ward who had a little house on their property they'd lived in for 14 years when they were first married, but then they built a very nice big home, and they really wanted to get rid of the old one. When the husband (who also works with Hiram) found out we were looking for something to live in, he said, "I have a house you can have, if you can figure out how to move it." That was interesting to us. I had never heard of that sort of thing being done. What? You can MOVE a house? Well, it turns out that yes, you can pretty much move anything, if you have the money to pay for it.

We got a couple of house movers to come out and give us bids, and we had one guy offer to move the house and put it on a foundation (we'd originally just thought we'd put it on railroad ties) for $18,000. Its a hefty sum, but when you're getting the house FREE...We thought it was a pretty good deal and accepted. There was a lot of prep work that needed to be done, including cutting down some trees and filling in a ditch, but its all paid off, because this morning, the house was successfully moved! Hooray. I am just so happy. I've been looking forward to today like it was Christmas. It will be even more exciting when the foundation is complete, and the home is set down on it. I'm so happy.

I've been looking at colors and deciding what I'm going to do to the house, so I'll definitely be posting tons of before and after pictures over the next few months. Stay tuned!
